St. Patrick's Day Concert & Fundraiser for the QC Celtic Festival
Friday, March 17, 2017 7:00 PM
$20.00 (+$2 fee)
The International music duo Four Shillings Short are coming to town for a special concert celebrating the music, poetry and storytelling tradition of Ireland. The husband/wife duo of Aodh Og O’Tuama from Cork, Ireland and Christy Martin will bring the history, legends and traditions of Ireland to life in a captivating concert “A Celebration of Ireland –music, poetry & stories from the Irish Tradition”. The evening will open with music on the Celtic Harp performed by local harpist Laural Almquist.
The Celtic Cultures Alliance of the QCA is an independent, secular, non-profit corporation formed to promote knowledge and understanding of the artistic, athletic, educational and historical contributions of the Celtic peoples. Proceeds from this fundraiser will be applied towards hosting the 2017 Celtic Festival and Highland Games of the Quad Cities. The Celtic Festival and Highland Games of the Quad Cities was founded by a local Highland Dance parent in response to the long travel distances required to take his daughters to competitions. Our festival is founded upon three cornerstones of Celtic culture: Heavy Athletics, Dance, and Bagpipes. All three can be found at our festival in a combination of competitions and demonstrations. The first Celtic Festival was held in 1999 at the Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, and in 2010 moved to its current home in Centennial Park along the Davenport riverfront.
The 2017 Celtic Festival and Highland Games will be held September 15-16, and will include performances by Calan (from Wales) and Drops of Green (from Ireland) along with many Celtic style groups from the Midwest.
Laural first heard the harp when she was 4 while in Chicago. Instantly there was a connection. She told her grandma that someday "she wanted to play angel wing music". She started playing at the age of 10 and now, at 17 years old, she is becoming an accomplished Harpist. Laural plays at Churches, Senior Citizen Centers, Local libraries, The Coffee House for the Arts Council, Nursing Homes and Weddings. She has played in numerous Talent Shows, most recently at the Illinois State Fair, where she placed third among some very talented musicians. She also plays representing her school at State Events. Last year, Laural auditioned for IMEA, and competed against several other harpists and got the role as Harpist in an advanced Student Orchestra. She can be seen at the Bishop Hill Bakery playing in the many wonderful festivals Bishop Hill has to offer. Her highlight of last year was performing five Christmas Shows at Northwoods Community Church with over 25,000 attendants, performing with famous artists, and playing in The Celtic Festival and Highland Games of the Quad cities. She produced her first CD in 2015.
